Hitagi was once a bright and cheerful model student, but up until meeting Koyomi Araragi, she was cold and distant, avoiding interaction with her classmates as much as she can. She had an extremely sharp, witty and verbally abusive tongue that lashed at anyone who tried to get near her, and rarely changed in tone and expression when speaking. Her behavior, coupled with her wealthy background and the tendency for others to place her on a pedestal, is the reason she had no friends. She wanted it that way. After all, isn't it weird for someone to weigh a mere five kilograms? This was the result of her encounter with the crab god: by giving away her weight — her emotions — she numbed herself to the pain and guilt of her past and present. She couldn't feel sorrow, anger or joy for anything.

That changed when she met Koyomi Araragi.

Several conmen tricked her and her family in the past, so she is very guarded when it comes to her interactions with others. Before she met Koyomi, she treated kindness with hostility. She still does. If someone won't cooperate it is likely that she will threaten them with violence in the form of boxcutters and staplers. However, once someone gains her trust, they will have earned a friend for life. When Koyomi helped her take her emotions back from the crab god, her heart began to open up.

Hitagi is still getting used to her emotions. To her, it's like learning to walk again. She is sometimes unsure of who to trust. She doesn't want to isolate herself and feel like "the weird one". But clumsy as she may be with friendships and romance, never does she hesitate to throw herself into the fray. She faces difficulties in life head on, never looking back. Sometimes this causes problems for her. She ignores Suruga, an underclassman who is in love with her, after Koyomi becomes her boyfriend, thinking that she is a nuisance to the life she has now. She eventually comes around to save her boyfriend from Suruga's rage, though. Hitagi's rapid change in personality don't go unnoticed by the characters in Monogatari: according to Koyomi, it takes her ten months to go from an unfeeling, abrasive ice queen, to a sweet, cheerful and thoughtful girl who would do anything for her loved ones. Tsubasa admires her despite being Hitagi's rival in love; Hitagi faces her fears and seeks to improve herself — a bright and burning existence compared to Tsubasa, who has always ignored her problems and stayed the same.

Although she seems mean-spirited, Hitagi is neither selfish nor stuck-up. Even before her family's fall from grace, she had a very humble outlook on life and never showed off what wealth she had. When she remarks on how great she is compared to the pathetic Koyomi, she is merely joking; her insults hit hard, but she always makes her meaning clear in the end. Hitagi is good at reading the mood, choosing not to comment on Koyomi talking to himself while he was actually interacting with a ghost, and although Suruga insulted Hitagi back in junior high, she protected Suruga from the entire student body who was angered by the insult. According to her, she doesn't have a strong sense of justice. She is simply an enemy of evil.

And the violation of one's trust is the most evil thing of all.

She hates the conmen who swindled her family out of their fortunes. She also hates her mother, who allowed a cult leader to try and rape her. But what hurt Hitagi the most was her parents' divorce, which she blamed herself for. Having lost her family once, Hitagi doesn't want to go through the pain of losing another loved one, so much that her love can go to extremes. In Nisemonogatari, she chains Koyomi up in the abandoned cram school building to protect him from the conman, Kaiki. On several occasions earlier in the series, she even tells Koyomi that she would rather be the first to kill him because that means she will be the one with him in his final moments. She is willing to pay millions of yen to the man she hates the most, Kaiki, in exchange for Araragi's safety in Koimonogatari. Her love borders on frightening, but it comes from a sincere place. Now that she's come out of her shell and learned to love again, she's become better for it.

Powers
Hitagi learned how to use stationery as weapons to keep people from getting to close to her. They are used to threaten rather than to fight, but she is not averse to wounding someone to get the message across. Other than that, she is an ordinary girl.

Depending on her faction, I'd like her to work as a bookkeeper, a card dealer, a research assistant at a lab, a spy, a writer, or a fortune teller (who is also a spy?!). Something that has to do with literature or the stars would be nice.

Does your character have any connection to a 'real life' supernatural entity or mythological figure?
Hitagi had contact with a crab god, the Heavy Stone Crab, but has gotten rid of the god's influence on her after Koyomi and Oshino helped her in Hitagi Crab. Oshino claims that the Heavy Stone Crab originates from the mountains of Kyushu, but the legend is entirely fictional.

Hitagi also occasionally works with Koyomi (who is part-vampire — it's complicated) in his dealings with the oddities (spirits, gods, youkai, vampires, etc.) in their town. As of her canon point, she has yet to help him with any cases.
